HEALTH

We have been blinded by palate pleasure to the havoc we are wreaking on our bodies. Heart disease is now the leading cause of death for men and women. Countless studies now demonstrate the link between animal consumption and human mortality. Do we need to be filtering nutrients through the body of an animal ? Or should we be going directly to the source & eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seeds and legumes ? These whole foods do not harm us and offer protection against many diseases.

In this brilliant presentation by Michael Gregor he presents the scientific evidence showing that a whole food plant based diet can prevent 14 of the 15 leading causes of death. ‘Death in America is largely a foodborne illness. Focusing on studies published just over the last year in peer-reviewed scientific medical journals, Michael Greger, M.D., offers practical advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent, treat, and even reverse many of the top 15 killers in the United States.’

1.7 million Australians now living with diabetes

With a staggering 1.7 million Australians now living with diabetes, we feel this disease is worth exploring more closely. Dr.Michael Gregor explores the research, stating: “Although humans can be exposed to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP`s), occupational accidents and the environment most of the human exposure nowadays is from ingestion of contaminated food as a result of bioaccumulation in the food chain. The main source (around 95%) of POP`s intake is through dietary intake of animal fats.

The 5 Headed Chronic Western Disease Dragon

Rip Esselstyn discusses how a plant based diet can slay the 5 headed chronic western disease dragon, which is creating death and destruction on individuals, families, cities and states.

  1. Cardiovascular disease (CVD)/Heart Disease
    • 1 out of 2 Australians will die from cardiovascular disease (CVD)/Heart Disease [1].
  2. Breast cancer
    • An estimated 126,800 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, with that number set to rise to 150,000 by 2020 [2]
  3. Prostate cancer
    • 1 in 2 Australian men and 1 in 3 Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. And still the frantic fundraising and searching for a cancer cure goes on.[2]
  4. Diabetes
    • By 2030, 50% of Americans and Australians will be pre diabetic or pre-diabetic.
Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system. 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes. Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. This includes all types of diagnosed diabetes (1.2 million known and registered) as well as silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (up to 500,000 estimated). More than 100,000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past year. For every person diagnosed with diabetes there is usually a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ every day in a support role. This means that an estimated 2.4 million Australians are affected by diabetes every day. The total annual cost impact of diabetes in Australia estimated at $14.6 billion. Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia; increasing at a faster rate than other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer [3]
  5. Obesity
    • Obesity rates in Australia are climbing faster than anywhere else in the world, according to a new study. The results of the global study into obesity rates, published in the medical journal The Lancet, show almost a quarter of the country’s children and 63 per cent of the adult population is overweight. Australia’s obesity levels are now on par with the United States, but slightly less than New Zealand. The study has prompted health experts to call on the Federal Government to commit to a national anti-obesity strategy [4] . Just obesity costs Australians $56.6 billion annually [5].

Plant Strong and Healthy Living

Rip Esselstyn is a former firefighter & vegan tri-athlete who advocates a plant-strong diet to combat chronic diseases. Rip is also son of the famous Dr.Caldwell Esselstyn, who released an inspiring book called `Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease.` It is becoming clearer that every one of the diseases listed above are preventable or reversible with plant based nutrition.

Effectively tackling the chronic western disease dragon begins today with what is on your fork. The remarkable Neal Barnard MD discusses the science behind food additions. Willpower is not to blame: chocolate, cheese, meat, and sugar release opiate-like substances. Dr. Barnard also discusses how industry, aided by government, exploits these natural cravings, pushing us to eat more and more unhealthy foods. A plant-based diet is the solution to avoid many of these problems. Neal Barnard is the founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

World Health Organization: Processed Meat Causes Cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified processed meat as a carcinogen, something that causes cancer. And it has classified red meat as a probable carcinogen, something that probably causes cancer. IARC is the cancer agency of the World Health Organization.
Processed meat includes hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausage, and some deli meats. It refers to meat that has been treated in some way to preserve or flavor it. Processes include salting, curing, fermenting, and smoking. Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb, and goat. Processed meat includes hot dogs, ham, bacon, sausage, and some deli meats. Twenty-two experts from 10 countries reviewed more than 800 studies to reach their conclusions. They found that eating 50 grams of processed meat every day increased the risk of colorectal cancer. See Full W.H.O summarized report here.

As expected, after the World Health Organization report, many supposed fitness advocates are still trying to tell you that meat and processed meat are not harmful. YouTuber, Vegan Gains, explains in detail why they’re dead wrong, referencing all his findings. (Language warning)

Heart disease kills over 600,000 Americans each year.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, it kills over 600,000 Americans each year, and coronary heart disease is costing Americans 108.9 billion dollars each year. Heart disease claimed the lives of 19,766  Australians (13% of all deaths) in 2013, killing 54 Australians each day, or one Australian every 27 minutes. Each year, around 54,000 Australians suffer a heart attack.  This equates to one heart attack every 9 minutes. Heart attack claimed 8,611 lives in 2013, or on average, 24 each day [1]. We refer to 2013, as current figures take up to 2 years to collate and process. So what exactly causes heart disease and can it be avoided by simple diet and lifestyle modifications?
